Researchers have been investigating this over the years. And it turns out that robots are not good at folding clothes.
As reported by NPR, machines need clear rules in order to function. And it's hard for them to figure out what's going on in those messes (“Say, where does the underwear stop?” and where do the towels start?")

That doesn't mean it's impossible, says Professor Pieter Abbeel of the University of California. Berkeley spent years teaching robots how to fold towels. In the end, the process was reduced from 20 minutes to 1 and a half minutes.

And FoldiMate, a Silicon Valley company, raised some hopes and raised eyebrows when it showed a prototype of its eponymous clothes-folding robot at the Consumer Electronics Show in early 2019, saying it could fold about 25 items of laundry — with the exception of its own. Small items like socks and larger items like sheets in less than 5 minutes for about $980.
